Nigerian forward, Shola Ameobi, is on trials with English Championship side, Bolton Wanderers, the club manager, Neil Lennon, has confirmed.
The 33-year-old striker has already trained with Huddersfield Town, Shieffield Wednesday and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Despite holding talks with Huddersfield manager, Chris Powell, after playing in a closed-door match, the club did not offer him a contract.
Now Lennon said the former Newcastle United man could bring to his team a different quality considering his experience.
But the Bolton manager explained that Ameobi will have to convince them of that quality while he trains with them for the time being.
“He is a name but I look at the quality of the player. He has freedom of contract and is available so it is worth having a look at. If we like what we see there might be business to be done.
“He’s only on trial, hasn’t signed. We’re thankful he’s come in and given us that chance to have a look at him and obviously he’s thankful to get the opportunity to show what he can do.
“We’re playing well on the whole but we still need bodies in terms of strikers. We’re constantly looking to strengthen the squad and will look to make that happen during the loan window and January,” said Lennon.
Ameobi moved to Turkey to join Gaziantep BB last season and then returned to England to link up with former Newcastle gaffer, Alan Pardew, at Crystal Palace before leaving the London club in the summer.
The striker spent 14 years with the Magpies and scored 79 goals in 397 appearances including 219 starts before leaving the club in 2014.
Ameobi represented Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil and has made 10 appearances for the West African nation, scoring twice.
