Ellen White swoops to give England Women victory over United States

A last-minute goal from Ellen White gave England Women a 1-0 win over world champions the United States in the SheBelieves Cup at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.

White struck from close range after Lucy Bronze’s superb shot from 25 yards came back off the crossbar.

After a quiet start, England goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain was called into action in the 19th minute to deny Rose Lavelle from close range.

The Lionesses, who announced before the game that defender Casey Stoney will miss the remainder of the competition with a hamstring injury, responded and striker Nikita Parris brought a superb save from Ashlyn Harris with a fierce drive after 32 minutes.

That gave England confidence and Toni Duggan fired an effort inches over the crossbar shortly afterwards.

Lavelle fired over early in the second half, while Duggan brought another good stop from Harris with a 25-yard free-kick after 71 minutes.

England got the winner in the 89th minute when Bronze hit the crossbar and White showed great anticipation to follow up and poke the rebound into the roof of the net from close range.

England were beaten 2-1 by France on Wednesday and will play Germany in their final game on Tuesday. The three matches are a vital part of the Lionesses’ preparations for this summer’s European Championship.

England also play Italy and Austria in April.
