Enyimba inch closer to seventh title

Former Caf Champions League winners Enyimba gave one more step towards the NPFL title race after playing out a 0-0 draw at Nasarawa United on Wednesday.

Despite the absence of goalkeeper Femi Thomas and influential winger Ezekiel Bassey, Enyimba soldiered on with their manager Kadiri Ikhana turning to Moses Ocheje, who got a rare start in goal.

The under-23 trio of Kingsley Sokari, Daniel Etor and Peter Onyekachi also started against Nasarawa United who were without midfielder Yaro Bature, who along with Thomas and Bassey is on international duty with the Super Eagles.

It was a tight contest between the two teams at the Lafia Stadium but Enyimba should have taken the lead inside the last five minutes of the first half when Sokari missed a glorious opportunity.

Though Nasarawa United head coach Kabiru Dogo sent on Emmanuel Edmond, who added impetus to their play, Enyimba were very tidy at the back.

Four minutes to the end, Enyimba defender Chinedu Udoji, who has been impressive in the second round of the season, cleared on the goal-line to deny Nasarawa United taking the lead late in the game.

The Peoples Elephant did just enough to take a point that could play a vital role in their bid to win a seventh record Nigerian title.

Enyimba now lead the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) standings by five points, having amassed 62 points.

But that lead could be cut to three points if Warri Wolves defeat Akwa United on Thursday morning.

The Wolves versus Akwa United game was rained off on Wednesday and will now take place from 9am CAT.
