Erik Lamela hat-trick gifts Tottenham top spot

Erik Lamela scored a first-half hat-trick as Tottenham secured top spot in Group J with a convincing 4-1` victory over Monaco.
The Argentine’s ability has been frequently questioned since making a £30m move in 2013 but even his harshest critic would find it difficult to pick a fault in his performance on this occasion as the 23-year-old bagged a fantastic first career treble. He now has five goals in five Europa League appearances this season.
It took just two minutes for Lamela to break the deadlock and, within 37 minutes, he had completed a hat-trick.
A brief spell of Monaco pressure resulted in a goal with Stephan El Shaarawygetting off the mark on 61 minutes with a fine strike before Tom Carroll broke his Europa League duck to add a fourth for the hosts on 77 minutes.
With qualification already secured and only a point required to win the group boss Mauricio Pochettino made seven changes to his side with star players such as Harry Kane on the bench but his second-string side didn’t disappoint.
Eighteen-year-old Joshua Onomah – who was handed his first start – was particularly impressive and the lively youngster should have scored only to be denied by goalkeeper Danijel Subasic.
The win means Spurs progress to the last 32 of the competition having collected 13 points from their six group games.
