Ex-US gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced to prison for between 40 and 175 years on Wednesday.
Nassar had already pleaded guilty to multiple counts of sexual assault against girls and young women but 156 individuals came forward to speak at the seven-day hearing, saying that they had suffered abuse from the former physician.
There were also some who submitted letters to the court privately.
Following an emotional hearing period where Nassar’s victims gave powerful testimony Judge Rosemarie Aqualina told him he will “be in darkness the rest of his life.”
She said “It is my honour to sentence you because, sir, you do not deserve to walk outside of a prison ever again,
“Anywhere you walk, destruction would occur to those most vulnerable.
“I just signed your death warrant.”
Nassar, who frequently hid his face as victims were speaking, said “I will carry your words with me for the rest of my days.”
