Lionel Messi lasted just 10 minutes of Barcelona’s Liga match against Las Palmas and has been ruled out for up to eight weeks.
The Argentina forward had to be replaced by Munir El Haddadi at Camp Nou after he succumbed to a knee problem. Messi was taken to hospital for tests and Barcelona later confirmed via a club statement that he could be missing for as much as two months with a ligament tear.
Barca’s all-time record goalscorer appeared to jar his left knee when having a shot blocked by a Las Palmas defender. Messi tried to carry on but was unable to continue and went straight down the tunnel after being taken off by coach Luis Enrique.
Messi will be hoping to return in time for the clasico at Real Madrid on November 22, or the home game against Roma in the Champions League two days later. Barcelona are already short of numbers having lost Rafinha to a long-term knee injury and have petitioned FIFA to allow them to register Arda Turan ahead of January, when their transfer ban expires.
