The Dutch legend, who won three consecutive European Cups with Ajax, was diagnosed last Tuesday, reports newspaper Mundo Deportivo, which also cited two Catalan radio stations. The 68-year-old is said to be undergoing tests to determine the extent of the disease and is said to feel strong despite the illness. The former Barcelona player and manager had double heart bypass surgery in 1991.
ruyff was one of the most famous exponents of the “Total Football” philosophy and won the Ballon d’Or in 1971, 1973 and 1974. He spent five years between 1973 and 1978 as a Barca player, and returned as trainer in 1988, remaining in place until 1996. He won the League title in 1973-74 and the Copa del Rey in 1977-78, then coached Barca to four titles between 1990-91 and 1993-94, as well as the 1992 European Cup. Cruyff also represented the now-defunct Los Angeles Aztecs and Washington Diplomats in the NASL after leaving Barca.
He returned to Spain for a brief spell with Levante before heading back to Ajax and rounding out his playing days at Feyenoord. Ajax became his first coaching role in 1984 before taking over the bench at Camp Nou.
