Liverpool thump Huddersfield to keep pressure on City

Liverpool grabbed top spot in the Premier League as they crushed Huddersfield Town 5-0 at Anfield – with attention now shifting to title rivals Manchester City’s trip to Burnley on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side needed just 15 seconds for Naby Keita to put them ahead, with Sadio Mane then finishing off a clinical attack with a powerful header to double their advantage shortly after.

On his 100th performance for Liverpool, Mohamed Salah was found by a superb pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold and it was three before half-time.

After the restart, Mane scored another header from a Jordan Henderson cross, while there was even better news when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came off the bench to make his first appearance in 367 days after his serious knee injury. Salah then grabbed his second of the game with less than 10 minutes of normal time remaining.

The win puts Liverpool two points ahead of Manchester City, who have three games to play, the first a trip to Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon.

The pressure is now on City. They go to Burnley on Sunday, and nothing is guaranteed. They should win – should – but the pressure is exceptional and Liverpool have the psychological advantage after tonight. Neither side can afford a slip up, and nothing is getting any easier.

Andrew Robertson (Liverpool): Of course the strikers were at the heart of the victory, but Robertson showed just how important he is to the Liverpool side. At the back he was reliable and sturdy, but going forward he was vital to Liverpool swamping the opposition, and set up his side’s second goal.

23’ – GOAL! Liverpool 2-0 Huddersfield. Sane scores – Van Dijk steams forward, plays in Robertson, and it’s whipped in for Mane who leaps near the penalty spot to fire in a header past Lossl. Simple and ruthless.

45+1’ – GOAL! Liverpool 3-0 Huddersfield. Salah scores – On his 100th Liverpool game, Salah drops behind the defence and Alexander-Arnold casually plops the ball in front of him to lob the oncoming Lossl.

55’ – ALISSON SAVE! Bacuna curls in a dangerous shot from distance, and Alisson does well to punch it away to his right.

66’ – GOAL! Liverpool 4-0 Huddersfield. Mane scores – Robertson chips in a cross, it comes to Salah, it’s worked back to Henderson and he makes it 20 goals for the season with a superb header.

83’ – GOAL! Liverpool 5-0 Huddersfield. Salah scores – Yet another goal tonight. The goal difference is disappearing. A threaded pass for Robertson from Shaqiri, the defender plays it inside for Salah, and he can tap in.
