Same old story for United under Van Gaal

Manchester United have nothing to play for until the FA Cup, and it showed. It was the usual performance for United at home under Louis van Gaal. There was plenty of possession, and there were inexplicable choices in the line up. Marouane Fellaini’s presence is no longer any surprise, but he is as far from being an effective midfielder as he ever has been.

Marcos Rojo has been comfortably the worst defender in a squad that has Phil Jones. Wayne Rooney’s best position is yet to be decided, but there’s a good chance that it’s going to be found in the MLS. Rumours continue to swirl around Van Gaal and the likely arrival of Jose Mourinho – and yet, United let it drift, not making any official comment, making a bad situation worse.

From the players, to the manager, to the executives, to the owners – even a draw against the champions elect highlighted how bad everything has become.
