Southampton hit four as Arsenal miss out on top spot

With Liverpool’s victory against Leicester City earlier in the day, Arsenal had the chance to move into first place with a win. Their opponents were looking for their first win in five league games and were sitting just four points off the relegation zone.
The deadlock was broken when Cuco Martina scored from 30 yards, with an astonishing, curling shot with the outside of his right foot. Arsenal struggled to find an answer in the first half.
Southampton added three more, through Shane Long (twice) and Jose Fonte, as Arsenal got their familiar sensation of missed opportunities. Wenger could not inspire his side to take their chance to go top of the league, in an oddly predictable shock.
They remain favourites for the league, though, and will hope to recover in their next match against Bournemouth on Monday. Surely they can finally win the league again?
