Yaya Toure has issued an official apology to Manchester City and Pep Guardiola following the row which has seen him exiled from the first team.
Guardiola told Toure, who has made over 250 appearances for City and is one of their best ever players, that he would not consider him for selection until he received an apology from the midfielder’s agent, Dimitri Seluk, for a string of negative comments he made about the manager.
Just five days ago, Seluk, who has been a long-term critic of Guardiola, said of his exclusion of Toure: “This is his revenge. And it is personal, not professional.
“I think the plan was to humiliate Yaya – and all the other players who have made history for Manchester City in the last six years.”
In an attempt to rescue his City career, Toure has now issued an apology to Guardiola on behalf of himself and his agent, distancing himself from Seluk’s inflammatory outbursts.
“I wish to apologise – on behalf of myself and those who represent me – to the management team and all those working at the club for the misunderstandings from the past,” he wrote on Facebook.
“Those statements do not represent my views on the club or the people who work there. I have nothing but respect for Manchester City and only wish the best for the football club.
“I am immensely proud to have played a part in the club’s history and want to help City succeed further. I live to play football and entertain the fans.
“On that note, I would like to thank all of the fans for their messages through this difficult period. This means a great deal to me and my family.”
In an interview with the Daily Mirror, Seluk said he would also be making contact with Guardiola after being implored to rebuild bridges by City fans and Toure’s team-mates.
“I have spoken to Yaya in the last few days and he has asked me to make the peace with Pep,” said Seluk.
“I agreed with him that I had to do what I could to make the situation better, because Yaya and Manchester City have been caught in the crossfire. I am genuine in what I say.
“Some City fans have contacted Yaya to say that a way forward must be found. And some of Yaya’s team-mates at City have also contacted me to say the same thing.”
