Chiefs send Platinum Stars packing

Goals from Erick Mathoho, Siphelele Mthembu and George Maluleka saw Kaizer Chiefs beat Platinum Stars 3-0 in a Telkom Knockout Last 16 match at the Moruleng Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The home side started the better of the two teams with the first effort on goal in the third minute courtesy of a 30-yard free-kick from Vuyo Mere, but he saw his stinging shot well-saved by Reyaad Pieterse.

Dikwen continued to control the opening 20 minutes, but for all their possession they could not really penetrate a resolute Chiefs defence.

Instead, the next effort on goal went Amakhosi’s way in the 21st minute when a left wing cross from Keegan Ritchie was acrobatically met by Bernard Parker, but his scissor-kick from 16-yards out was saved by the keeper.

On the half hour mark Stars’ Masibusane Zongo was lucky to escape a straight red card after deliberating Siphiwe Tshabalala in the face, but was only shown a yellow card.

Five minutes later Edward Manqele almost gave Chiefs the lead when he controlled a long ball into the box, but fired into the side-netting from 14-yards out at an acute angle on the right.

Tshabalala came close as well in the 38th minute when his 20-yard volley whistled narrowly over the target.

Chiefs continued to press forward and were rewarded for their efforts a minute before the break when Erick Mathoho headed the ball home after latching onto a left-sided free-kick into the box, 1-0.

The Amakhosi persisted with their attacking pressure at the start of the second half and were magnificently denied a second goal in the 54th minute after keeper Mbongeni Mzimela turned striker Calmadine Abraw’s shot from the edge around the post.

Abraw should really have scored just after the hour mark when some good work by Edward Manqele saw him into space a couple yards out from goal, but the Togolese international fired over the target.

Only the woodwork denied Chiefs their second goal in the 81st minute when a 30-yard free-kick from Tshabalala struck the post with the keeper well-beaten.

Dikwena threw numbers forward in the final ten minutes in search of an equaliser and in doing so left themselves exposed at the back.

Chiefs took full advantage of that and scored two late goals on the counter-attack courtesy of substitutes Siphelele Mthembu and George Maluleka, 3-0.
