The Reds appeared to be set for victory after Christian Benteke had powered them into the lead with a stunning header, but Saints rallied to grab a deserved equaliser late on
Sadio Mane’s late, bundled equaliser dashed Jurgen Klopp’s hopes of securing a first win as manager of Liverpool as Southampton fought back to draw 1-1 at Anfield on Sunday evening.
The visitors had the better of the early exchanges, almost taking the lead through Virgil van Dijk, but fell behind to a thunderous header from substitute Christian Benteke, whose half-time introduction appeared to have changed the game.
But Ronald Koeman’s men rallied at the death, with a deep set-piece headed back across goal by another substitute, Gaston Ramirez, with Mane on hand to force the ball over the line.
The Senegal international still had time to pick up a second booking in stoppage time before being handed his marching orders, but there was too little time for Liverpool to take advantage as the spoils were shared.
